What is the farthest back anyone has started and gone on to win the Indianapolis 500?

December 22nd, 2009
Indianapolis
Wendy B asked:

Obviously, anything can happen. But what I would like to know is this: What is the farthest back position that any driver has ever started the race (out of 33 cars) before going on to win the Indianapolis 500? And if the answer took place in a year before the use of familiar “Indy style” cars, what is the farthest back in recent history?

Why don’t you post this question in the Indy section? This is Formula One real racing.
